There are many different reasons for which some babies refuse bottles, and mōmi addresses some of those reasons. In one of our product trials, 83% of bottle refusers’ moms found mōmi “somewhat better” or “much better” than other bottles, and over 50% of bottle-refuser babies accepted the mōmi bottle two weeks after introduction!  And 69% of bottle-resisters were left “most satisfied” or “completely satisfied” after mōmi feedings. Your baby may or may not accept the mōmi nipple immediately. It is not unusual for a baby to chew or gnaw on the nipple during the first few introductions as the baby is getting used to the different feel. Don’t lose heart if not a lot of milk is consumed during those first few feedings! With time, your baby can become more familiar with the nipple and progress to taking a full feed.

mōmi works best when it’s given as your baby’s very first bottle after breastfeeding is well-established.  This is because your baby will not yet have adapted to the free-flowing nature of conventional bottle nipples. 

Introducing the mōmi bottle before introducing other bottles may help the baby transition seamlessly from breast to bottle, and back to breast again.

If you’ve only introduced a conventional bottle a handful of times, and aren’t using it for the majority of your baby’s feeds, there is a good likelihood that your baby will accept the mōmi nipple. Especially if your baby is still successfully nursing at the breast!  

If your baby has become accustomed to a conventional bottle nipple, we recommend starting with the “M” or “F” flow rate so that baby doesn’t become too frustrated with having to work harder for food during those first few feeds with the mōmi nipple. You can back down in flow rate gradually from there if needed.

Many babies who have adapted well to other bottles may still benefit from mōmi. In our product trials, parents using the mōmi bottle reported significantly less regurgitation with mōmi than with other bottles - and even than with breastfeeding. Over half reported no regurgitation whatsoever with mōmi.
